What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom restoration that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance. Once cemented into place, the crown protects the tooth while allowing it to function naturally and comfortably.
Crowns are one of the most versatile restorations in dentistry — used to repair severely damaged teeth, protect weakened teeth from fracturing, complete a root canal, anchor a dental bridge, or restore a dental implant. When a tooth has been weakened beyond what a filling can reliably support, a crown is often the most predictable way to preserve it long-term.

Common Reasons We Recommend a Crown
- A tooth with a large cavity that has lost too much structure to be reliably restored with a filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth that is at risk of worsening over time without full coverage protection
- A tooth that has been significantly weakened by decay, multiple fillings, or previous dental work
- Following a root canal, when the tooth needs to be protected and reinforced
- A broken tooth where a significant portion of the crown has been lost
- An existing crown that is failing, cracked, or no longer fitting properly
- Covering a dental implant as the final visible restoration
- Severe wear caused by bruxism or acid erosion that has significantly reduced tooth height
Your Crown Treatment, Step by Step
First Appointment — Preparation & Temporary Crown.
During your first crown appointment, we numb the tooth and gently reshape it to create space for your custom restoration. Detailed digital impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where your custom crown is created. Before you leave, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and maintain your smile while your permanent crown is being made.
Between Appointments.
Your permanent crown is custom-crafted in a dental laboratory using the specifications of your impressions. This process typically takes two to three weeks. The lab works to match the carefully matched to your surrounding teeth.
Second Appointment — Permanent Placement.
The temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the permanent crown is carefully tried in for fit, bite, and aesthetics. We make any necessary adjustments before permanently cementing it in place. Once everything looks and feels right, the crown is securely cemented into place and your bite is carefully checked for comfort.
